MacBook Charger Compatibility Table

Use this pillar table to identify exactly which charger your MacBook needs. Wattage matters — a lower-wattage charger will work but will either charge slowly or not at all under load.

If your MacBook is not listed, match it by physical connector: round magnetic L-shape = MagSafe 1, thinner magnetic T-shape = MagSafe 2, newer reversible magnetic = MagSafe 3, oval reversible plug = USB-C.

MagSafe 1 vs MagSafe 2 vs MagSafe 3

Apple has produced three generations of MagSafe, each physically incompatible with the others. Knowing which one you own saves you from buying the wrong charger.

MagSafe 1 (2006–2012). The original magnetic connector. Two shapes existed — an L-shape (2006–2010) and a T-shape "MagSafe 1 revision" (2010–2012). Both use the same pinout and are cross-compatible. You will find MagSafe 1 on white MacBooks, early unibody MacBook Pros, and MacBook Airs through 2011. Apple discontinued the MagSafe 1 charger brick years ago, which is why we see so many users in Dubai desperate for a replacement. Charger House stocks both new-old-stock Apple units and tested compatible 60W and 85W MagSafe 1 adapters.

MagSafe 2 (2012–2017). Thinner, wider T-shape connector introduced with the Retina MacBook Pro and second-gen MacBook Air. MagSafe 2 is electrically similar to MagSafe 1 but the plug is shaped differently — you cannot force a MagSafe 1 brick into a MagSafe 2 port without an adapter. Apple sold a MagSafe 1-to-MagSafe 2 converter; we still carry these for customers with a good MagSafe 1 brick who need to charge a 2013 MacBook.

MagSafe 3 (2021–Present). Apple killed MagSafe in 2016 when it switched MacBook Pros to USB-C, then revived the connector in October 2021 on the 14" and 16" M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pros. MagSafe 3 is thinner, reversible, and — critically — delivers up to 140W of Power Delivery 3.1 EPR (Extended Power Range), something no MagSafe 1 or 2 ever did. It is a detachable USB-C-to-MagSafe-3 cable plugged into a standard Apple USB-C brick, so if you lose only the cable you can replace it without buying the whole brick. MagSafe 3 is physically and electrically incompatible with MagSafe 1 and 2 — do not try to force it.

USB-C vs MagSafe for MacBook — Which Is Better?

Since 2016, every MacBook Pro and MacBook Air that originally shipped with MagSafe also supports USB-C charging through any of its Thunderbolt/USB-C ports. This creates a real choice for users with 2021-or-later MacBook Pros.

MagSafe advantages. The magnetic detach genuinely saves MacBooks. If someone trips over your cable in a Dubai cafe, the magnet pops off instead of pulling your AED 10,000 laptop off the table. MagSafe 3 also fast-charges the 14" and 16" MacBook Pros faster than USB-C in most cases — MagSafe 3 can deliver the full 140W to a 16" MacBook Pro, while USB-C tops out at 96–100W on most third-party chargers because 140W USB-C PD 3.1 EPR is still rare.

USB-C advantages. One cable, many devices. A single 96W USB-C brick charges your MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iPhone. USB-C also lets you charge from any Thunderbolt port, so you can plug in on whichever side of the laptop is convenient. For travel, one USB-C brick replaces three bricks.

Our recommendation for UAE users: keep a MagSafe 3 cable for your home desk (safer, faster) and a 96W USB-C brick with a 2m cable for the office or travel. We sell both configurations as a bundle.

Original vs Compatible MacBook Chargers — The UAE Counterfeit Problem

This is the most important section of this guide. Dubai and Sharjah electronics markets are flooded with counterfeit Apple chargers — Dragon Mart, certain stalls in the Computer Plaza on Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road, and most of the phone-repair kiosks in Deira sell fakes that look identical to genuine Apple adapters. We see the damage they cause every week at our service counter.

How to spot a counterfeit MagSafe or USB-C charger:

1. Weight. A genuine Apple 85W MagSafe 2 brick weighs 305 grams. Counterfeits typically weigh 180–220 grams because they omit the isolation transformer and proper filtering. Bring a kitchen scale if you are shopping at Dragon Mart.
2. Serial number. Genuine Apple chargers have a 12-character alphanumeric serial etched into the plastic. Counterfeits either omit it or print it with ink that rubs off.
3. LED behavior. Real MagSafe LEDs glow amber when charging, green when full, and cleanly transition. Counterfeits often flicker, stay one color, or glow dimly.
4. Pin quality. Genuine MagSafe pins are spring-loaded and retract smoothly. Counterfeits have stiff pins that sometimes stick.
5. Price. A genuine Apple 96W USB-C charger retails above AED 350. If someone offers you one for AED 90, it is fake.

Can I Use Any USB-C Charger on My MacBook?

Technically yes — any USB-C Power Delivery charger will push some current into any USB-PD-capable MacBook. Practically, no, and here is why.

MacBooks negotiate voltage and wattage with the charger using USB-PD protocol. If the charger cannot deliver the wattage the MacBook requests, the MacBook either charges slowly, does not charge while the display is on, or drains the battery even while plugged in under heavy load.

Minimum safe wattages:

• MacBook Air (any generation): 30W USB-C PD minimum
• MacBook Pro 13": 61W USB-C PD minimum (67W for M1/M2)
• MacBook Pro 14": 67W USB-C PD minimum (96W recommended)
• MacBook Pro 15" / 16": 87W minimum, 96W or 140W recommended

A 20W iPhone charger will "charge" a 16" MacBook Pro at roughly 3–5W net, meaning the battery drains while plugged in if you are doing anything beyond reading email. Always match or exceed the original wattage. Higher-wattage chargers are safe — the MacBook only pulls what it needs.

Also check the cable. A cheap USB-C cable rated for 60W will bottleneck a 96W charger. For MacBook Pro 14" and 16", use a 100W-rated (5A) USB-C cable or a certified Thunderbolt 4 cable.

MacBook Charger FAQs

1. My MagSafe 2 LED does not light up. Is the charger dead?
Not always. Clean the MagSafe port on your MacBook with a wooden toothpick — lint and dust build up on the pins, especially in dusty UAE conditions. If that fails, the charger cable has likely frayed internally near the L-bend. Bring it to our Greens counter for a free diagnostic.

2. Can I charge my M1 MacBook Pro with my old 85W MagSafe 2 brick?
No. M1 MacBook Pros use either USB-C or MagSafe 3. MagSafe 1 and MagSafe 2 connectors are physically incompatible with MagSafe 3. You need a new charger.

3. Is a 140W charger safe for my 14" MacBook Pro?
Yes. The MacBook only draws what it needs (maximum 96W for the 14"). A 140W charger gives you headroom if you upgrade to a 16" later.

4. Why does my MacBook Pro 16" charge slower on USB-C than MagSafe 3?
The 16" MacBook Pro supports fast charging (0–50% in 30 minutes) only on MagSafe 3 with the 140W brick, or on USB-C with a PD 3.1 EPR-certified charger. Most USB-C chargers in UAE are PD 3.0, which tops out at 100W — below the 16"'s fast-charge threshold.

5. Does Charger House sell the official Apple 140W USB-C brick?

6. My charger is hot to the touch — is it dangerous?
Apple chargers run warm under load, which is normal. If it is too hot to hold for more than 2 seconds, or if it smells of burning plastic, stop using it immediately. Counterfeit chargers overheat because they lack proper thermal protection. Bring it in and we will test it on our load tester for free.
