If you have a MacBook with a base M1 or M2 chip, it supports one external display on its own, whatever dock you use. To run two or three monitors on these MacBooks, you need a dock with DisplayLink, which adds screens through a small free app. Our DisplayLink docks for MacBook are the Dell D6000 (open box, AED 275) and the Targus DOCK177AUZ (AED 1,249). The Targus DOCK180USZ (AED 250) is a simpler USB-C dock with 100W charging, for one external screen on a Mac.
How many screens does your MacBook support on its own?
| MacBook | External displays without DisplayLink |
|---|---|
| MacBook Air M1 or M2, 13-inch MacBook Pro M1 or M2 | 1 |
| MacBook Air M3 | 2, with the MacBook's lid closed |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 (base chip) | 1 |
| MacBook Pro with M1, M2 or M3 Pro chip | Up to 2 |
| MacBook Pro with M1, M2 or M3 Max chip | Up to 4 |
Your exact model's limit is in Apple's tech specs: Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → Specifications → Displays.
A normal USB-C dock with two video ports cannot get around this limit on a Mac. You get one extended screen, or the same picture on both. DisplayLink docks can, because they send the extra screens over USB with the DisplayLink Manager app.

Which one should you choose?
- Two or three monitors on a MacBook Air M1/M2: the Dell D6000. It is the lowest-cost way to add DisplayLink screens and it also charges the Air. It is open box: excellent condition, possibly without sealed packaging, with a 7-day money-back guarantee and a 30-day replacement warranty.
- Two 4K monitors at 60Hz from a desk setup: the Targus DOCK177AUZ. Plug your MacBook charger in separately.
- One monitor plus charging for a MacBook Pro: the Targus DOCK180USZ, with up to 100W over a single USB-C cable.
Before you buy: three things to know about DisplayLink on a Mac
- Install the DisplayLink Manager app (free, from Synaptics). macOS asks you to allow screen recording, which is how the app draws the extra screens.
- Streaming apps may not play protected video (some films and series) on a DisplayLink screen. Use the MacBook's own screen or the native external screen for those.
- DisplayLink suits office work. Documents, spreadsheets, browsers and video calls run well. For colour-critical or high-refresh gaming work, use the MacBook's native display output.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my second monitor show the same picture as the first? Your MacBook supports one external display natively and the dock has no DisplayLink. A DisplayLink dock adds the second screen.
Does the Dell D6000 work with a MacBook? Yes, through the DisplayLink Manager app, over USB-C.
Will the D6000 charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro? It provides 65W, below what a 16-inch Pro needs under load. Keep the MacBook's own charger connected for heavy work.
Can a dock replace my MacBook charger? The D6000 (65W) and DOCK180USZ (100W) charge over USB-C; the DOCK177AUZ does not charge MacBooks. For the right MacBook charger, see our MacBook chargers.
